Born in Rhode Island on February 5, 1895, Carmody graduated from Rhode Island School of Design in 1917. She also studied at the Art Students League and the Grand Central Art School in New York City and the Breckenridge School of Art in Gloucester, MA. Carmody spent a summer living in the Latin Quarter in Paris and, along with RISD colleague Stephen W. Macomber, took a special course in the figure from Hans Hofmann during 1935 December.
